  • My theory is Instagram and “insta-type-influencers” stole that market. It’s glamour fantasy, distilled. Less attention required, no complicated movie stuff in the way. And it gets a lot of eyeballs.

Glamour movie celebs are relics coasting on inertia, hence the constant stories of a $10 million paycheck for one movie being, uh, unsustainable.

Hence, I’m hoping Hollywood has a “medium sized” indie renaissance kinda like gaming is having now. Animation and filming is still pretty expensive, but it feels like tech has to be eroding the mega studio cost advantage.

  • F me. This hit really hard.

I think this line hit harder than any:

More likely than not, the current MAGA base would laugh and revel in photos of trans people having their heads shaved, having involuntary surgeries performed upon them, being correctively raped, and being forced to do manual labor…

…They would. This is not an exaggeration or “I hate MAGA” litmus test, millions would legit cheer this on from their little screens, like it’s the solution to the country’s problems, and social media platforms would egg them on and tailor posts to fit the individual. Hitler’s propaganda apparatus has nothing on us.

    F me.

Yeah I don’t see a way out of this either. Collapsing corporate social media would help more than the author realizes, I think, but still.

  • “I firmly believe that social media is the most harmful product that our kids have legal access to in Texas,” said Rep. Jared Patterson, R-Frisco, the bill’s author.

Agreed. I even disagree with the opposition’s take:

“What about the concern that this is helping these social media companies collect even more data on us,” State Rep. Erin Zwiener, D-Driftwood, asked Patterson.

Oh, they already know. But this takes away the corporate plausible deniability of “we didn’t know they were kids!” when, mostly, they do.

Enforcement of this will be a nightmare, kids will hate it with a burning passion, but I will take the regulation we can get. At this point, I am all for this scorched Earth approach.

  • Rust isn’t super fast to code for novices though, hence the OP post, where their sibling wasn’t very productive in the language to the point where porting the entire project was apparently worth it.

…Maybe this is a bonkers suggestion, but I wonder if they could hack in GraalVM and the AOT-compilable subsets of Java, Python and I think Lua it supports? Now that would be ease of use.

I think there are others projects for AOT compiled subsets of popular scripting languages too.
